Through the Fire: A Company at the Battle of Lo Giang

During the height of the 1968 Tet Offensive, the men of A Company were thrust into one of the most intense and chaotic engagements of the war. On February 8, the company was rapidly deployed to relieve besieged Marines at CAP Echo 4 near the village of Lo Giang. As the American soldiers advanced in a skirmish line across the open rice paddies toward the village tree line, they walked directly into a massive, coordinated ambush by a numerically superior force of North Vietnamese Army regulars and Viet Cong.

Pinned down in the mud with virtually no cover, A Company found themselves in a desperate, close-quarters fight for survival. The enemy launched a ferocious frontal assault and flanking maneuvers, closing the distance to within ten to twenty meters in an attempt to completely encircle the American forces. The sheer volume of enemy rocket, machine-gun, and rifle fire inflicted heavy casualties. During this brutal exchange, Second Platoon Leader 2LT Bowman was killed in action—posthumously earning the Distinguished Service Cross for his valor—and Company Commander CPT Francis X. Brennan was severely wounded.

Despite the loss of key leadership and the destruction of their radio communications, the men of A Company refused to break. Through sheer grit, disciplined firepower, and the daring, relentless support of Army helicopter resupply and medevac crews flying into the crossfire, the surviving soldiers consolidated a defensive perimeter in a nearby cemetery and held their ground. Against staggering odds, Alpha Company shattered the massive enemy assault, accounting for over 200 enemy casualties and forging a lasting legacy of unbreakable resolve.

Leading the Charge: The Legacy of Finnis McCleery and The Assault on Hill 352

On May 14, 1968, the men of A Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry were tasked with assaulting a heavily fortified North Vietnamese Army bunker complex on Nui Hoac ridge near Hill 352. The terrain offered almost no cover, and as the American forces advanced up the exposed slope, they were immediately met with a devastating barrage of enemy fire. Pinned down by an entrenched, company-sized enemy force operating from deep, reinforced bunkers, the American assault stalled, placing the unit in grave danger of a disastrous defeat.

Realizing the desperate situation, Platoon Sergeant Finnis D. McCleery initiated a daring, one-man assault to break the enemy lines. Rushing across open ground through intense fire, he attacked the key enemy defenses single-handedly. Despite sustaining multiple painful shrapnel wounds during his charge, McCleery systematically destroyed several fortified positions, at one point climbing atop a smoking bunker in full view of the enemy to rally his men forward. For his extraordinary valor and for saving the lives of his fellow soldiers, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Galvanized by McCleery’s charge, Sergeant Alan Allen launched his own fearless assault on the enemy’s left flank. Fighting with incredible composure, Allen methodically cleared multiple bunkers in close-quarters combat, neutralizing defenders and capturing numerous enemy weapons, earning the Silver Star for his pivotal role. Inspired by the staggering heroism of these leaders, the men of A Company surged forward into the trench lines, completely routing the entrenched NVA forces and securing a victory for the 1/6 Infantry.
